A Patch of Shadow

In A Patch of Shadow, Keisu and Thuresson have mapped public sculptures depicting characters from The Wonderful Adventures of Nils (1906–1907). The book, written by Selma Lagerlöf on commission from the Swedish National Union of Elementary School Teachers, came with explicit instructions to help shape a new national identity and idealized image of Sweden. Translated into over 60 languages and named by Le Monde in 1999 as one of the greatest books of the century, it has inspired films, novels, and television series. Through this mapping, the artists explore the book’s legacy both as a national symbol within Sweden and as a widely circulated cultural phenomenon, from the early 1900s to the present day.
